“If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavours to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.”
~Henry David Thoreau.
This is said with such certainty we can hardly not have hope. It speaks of a chance we all hope for; to live that existence we scarcely hold out for, because of our frustration and disappointment should we not reach it.
In the world we have both ‘first world’ and ‘third world’ places and economies. So too in life we also have first world life and third world life—in terms of poverty of spirit; not affluence, infrastructure, convenience and technology on this occasion.
Spiritual poorness is a paradox. We’re blessed to be poor enough to require spiritual help from God, but in him we can truly experience spiritual wealth of experience.
And this is where we get it wrong I’m sure. We settle for the ‘first-best’ third world life all because it takes a little faith, a glimmer of courage and a hopper of patient endurance to get us all the way there. And we simply don’t invest. We don’t take the chance on our dreams. We don’t grow spiritually because we don’t take the chance.
Why are we happy with a thirty percent portion of happiness when realistically we could have more? In this way we truly are ‘masters of our fate; captains of our souls.’
The quote at top is about having the tenacity to believe and search for the dream; to dare to live it as much as we possibly can, now. And this is the key: living it.
If you want to live a life as a canvas painter or a futures reveller a great cook, do it as much as you can in your spare time. Sow into it. The more time we invest in the thing—the life—we love, the more we not only begin to realise what it takes to reach the top, the more we hone our skills, knowledge and the enrichment of our enjoyment.
And perhaps your top is not ‘the top’ after all; the more we are prepared to invest in bringing definition to the dreamed-of life, the more we will advance ourselves there!
More and more we will break through our own expectations, reaching strata not even foreseen. Confidence and endeavour to live the life are the equal opportunities for each and every one of us. There’s no second chance at today. Live your dream life now. Commence.
